Venous reflux disease, also known as venous insufficiency,
is the underlying medical condition that leads to varicose
veins. Veins contain tiny valves that are designed to allow
one way flow of blood from the feet back up toward the heart. When these
valves malfunction, blood flows backwards, distending the leg veins until
they become abnormally engorged. They are then visible as varicose veins and /
or spider veins.
